Vern Lorin Gens, age 92, formerly of Mankato, died Monday, February 12, 2018 at LakeWood Health Center in Baudette, MN. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February, 16, 2018 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Woodland Hills Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Vern was born July 29, 1925 to August O. Gens and Frieda (Maus) Gens in Ceresco Township of Blue Earth County.  He was one of 13 children born to that union. He grew up in the Eagle Lake area and also in the Mahnomen area.
He served for a time in the Coast Guard on Lake Superior and then worked hauling gravel. He then got a job as a maintenance man at Archer Daniels Midland of Mankato and worked there until he retired at age 62. Vern married Pearl Green of Mankato on May 19, 1948. They had been married for 69 years. They had two children, a son, David, and a daughter, Gloria. The couple spent most of their life in the Mankato area and moved to Baudette in April of 2017.
Vern enjoyed fishing, hunting, building, gardening, playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato and a past member of both the Mankato Eagles Club and the Eagle Lake American Legion.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Pearl, one son, David (Mary Lee) Gens of Baudette, a daughter, Gloria (Ken) Hed of Mankato; sisters: Elnora Becker of Lake Crystal, Lorna Jesse of Helena, Montana, Donna Borneke of Eagle Lake, and Betty Wolff of Madison Lake; brothers; Richard Gens of Good Thunder and Robert Gens of Mapleton. Grandchildren: Cherie (Andy) Crass, Kevin Hed, Edward (JamieLynn) Gens, Peter Gens, Amy Lee Gens, Matthew (Jamie) Gens, Lisa (Scott) Kochniarczyk, and Aaron (Kellie) Gens. Great grandchildren; Amanda Crass, Reid Schrom, Alese, and Kenzie Gens, Harlow Gens, Kaylee and Marley Kochniarczyk and many many nieces and nephews.   He was a talented man who used his gifts to help others on any projects they might have going. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all his family.
