Wanda E Smith, 96 year old resident of Mankato, Minnesota, formerly of Owatonna, Minnesota, died peacefully on Saturday morning, February 17, 2018, at Brookdale Senior Living in Mankato,

A Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, at Woodland Hills Funeral Home, 1605 Woodland Avenue, Mankato, Minnesota 56001. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service with a rosary being said at 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Croix Hospice, 101 North 2nd Street, Suite 102, Mankato, Minnesota 56001.

Wanda was born August 7, 1921 to Robert D Brown and Cora (Ridenour) Brown in Vermillion, South Dakota. In 1927 the family moved to Mankato, Minnesota where Wanda attended school, graduating from Mankato High School in 1940,

Wanda worked one year on National Youth Administration. On June 21, 1941 Wanda married Robert P. (Bob) Smith at St. Peter & Paul’s Church in Mankato. During World War II Wanda worked at Automotive Electric Co. winding coils for radios for the Armed Forces.

After the war Wanda became a “Domestic Engineer” raising a large family. Bob and Wanda moved to Owatonna, Minnesota in 1960. Wanda cooked in the St. Mary’s school system eight years before working at Wenger Corp. until retirement in 1982.

Wanda enjoyed quilling, crocheting, painting, shelling and visiting friends. But most of all she enjoyed volunteering at church and anywhere else she was needed: Rosary leader for funerals, greeter at Mass, Catholic Daughters of America member and member of Senior Place.

Her family was her pride and joy. She is survived by her seven children: Roberta (Ken) Cherry of Rosemount, MN, Mary (Carl) Sehnert of Cordova, TN, Warren P. Smith of Mankato, MN, Chuck (Lorraine) Smith of Waseca, MN, Tony (Liz) Smith of Owatonna, MN, Brian (Leslie) Smith of Kodiak, AK and Trisha Smith of Warner Robins, GA. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all of her and her husband’s siblings, three great-grandchildren, one son-in-law and one daughter-in-law.

I was very sorry to hear of Aunt Wanda's passing but I had to smile at all the wonderful memories that came to mind of the family gatherings over the years and the special interest and attention Aunt Wanda always showed for each individual in our large and diverse extended family. She had such a good, positive, healthy and loving attitude toward life which is hard to find in today's world. I am so thankful that I knew and loved her. RIP Aunt Wanda. We will all miss you very much.
