Phyllis Johnson lived a long and full life. She was well loved by her family and huge community of friends.
Phyllis was born on July 8th, 1932 in Little Falls, MN to Elmer Julius (EJ) & Stella Halverson. She was raised in Fergus Falls, MN and graduated from Fergus Fall High School in 1950. After 2 years of pre-nursing classes at St. Olaf College, Phyllis transferred to the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in Minneapolis. Phyllis graduated with a Bachelor of Science as a Registered Nurse. She continued on with a post-graduate degree in Public Health Nursing. Phyllis was elected the National Student Nurse of the year in 1954-55, attending the ceremony that year. She was invited back as a NSNA guest speaker and featured alumni for reunions periodically throughout her life.

Phyllis worked for Blue Earth County for two years as a Public Health Nurse prior to serving for 25 years as one of two nurses in the Mankato area schools. Phyllis served 14 schools during her long tenure with District #77.

Phyllis was an advocate for children and families her entire life. She attended all of her children's school and sports activities. She would provide food for families and those in need at the drop of a hat, and always welcomed others who joined the family at the dining room table. She was known for her large pans of lasagna (which she often travelled with by car, camper, or plane), rice crispy bars, and monster cookies. Caramel rolls, ribs, and krumkake were always homemade by Phyllis around the holiday seasons.

Always an outdoor enthusiast, Phyllis enjoyed activities including cross country & downhill skiing in winter, biking, swimming, waterskiing and boating in the summer months at the family cabin at Ottertail Lake.

Phyllis was a Nationally Certified Ski Patrol at Mt. Kato for over 25 years and at Lutsen for a number of seasons as well. She was active in events at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, was a volunteer for the Thrivent Board of Blue Earth, Elvesvingen Lodge of the Mankato Sons of Norway, Pathstone Auxiliary, and Mankato PEO chapter BE. Later in life she and her second husband Phil Bachman became active in their new life in Lake Crystal, MN both with the Zion Church activities and community events.

When not at Ottertail, Trollhaugen, or Lutsen, Phyllis loved a good road-trip. Her travels in the early days with her family were in an Airstream Trailer and later a Mobile Traveler Motorhome. She always enjoyed visits to her son's homes in Vail, Bend, and Leavenworth, WA. She visited friends in Florida and Norway, and took other international trips to Europe, New Zealand, Jamaica and Mexico.

Phyllis is survived by her husband of 18 years, Phil Bachman of Mankato, her sons Dirk and his partner Victoria of Vail Co, Jeff & Suzanne and family Connor, Gabe and Will of Bend OR, and Brett & Nancy and family Finn and Stella of Leavenworth WA. Surviving also are her brother Bruce and his wife, Sarah, of Edina, MN along with 2 nieces and 4 nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents E.J. and Stella Halverson, husband Delbert Johnson and brother Richard Halverson.

Phyllis passed away peacefully at Pathstone Ecumen Memory Care from complications of dementia on November 25th, 2018. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday December 1st at Zion Lutheran Church in Lake Crystal at 12:00 noon. A luncheon will be served from 1-4 pm at the same location. Visitation will begin an hour before the service, at 11 am on Saturday. A small family burial for Phyllis will be at Woodland Hills Cemetery in Mankato at 4 pm on the same day. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Mount Kato Ski Patrol, Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Mankato, Zion Lutheran Church of Amor or the Zion Lutheran Choir of Lake Crystal.
