Elwood W. Huepenbecker, 91, died Sunday, January 26, 2020 in Mankato after a brief illness.

Born September 19, 1928 near Plato, Minnesota, Elwood was raised on the family farm.  His parents, William and Amanda, instilled a very strong work ethic and served as a source for his lifelong commitment to his Christian faith.

After graduating from Glencoe High School in 1946, Elwood enrolled at the Minneapolis Business School.  Elwood enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

In 1951 Elwood married Doris Breyer of nearby Lester Prairie.  After Elwood was discharged from the Army, they began looking for a job and a place to live, settling in Mankato.  In 1953 Elwood took a job at the Mankato Free Press, working in the commercial printing division, and became and award-winning pressman.  Elwood and Doris loved Mankato, and immediately became active in the church.  He was a proud member in the American Legion, where he also served in leadership roles, including as its Commander.

Elwood (aka EW or Huep) had a warm smile and gentle manner and he easily befriended people of all ages.  He had a tremendous love for his wife and their three boys and their families, and especially loved to watch them play sports.  EW and Dorie traveled wherever game schedules took them, and they were present at literally thousands of events.  He was glued to the radio or TV for all manner of Gophers and Minnesota sports when he could not attend them in person.  Elwood also loved to play cards, fish, and do woodworking.

Elwood was a loving companion to his wife of 66 years, Doris, who preceded him in death.  He is also preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Fred, Hilda and Lorna.

Surviving are his three sons: Dr. Paul (Nancy) of Carefree, AZ; Dr. John (Marcia Page) of Edina, MN and Jim of Owatonna, MN; six grandchildren: William (Diana), Anne Benson (Ryan), Tom (Kirstin) and Sarah, Kristen and Laura; four great grandchildren: Ryan and Olivia Benson and Sam and Madeline Huepenbecker; his sister Doris Schrupp (Orville) and several nieces and nephews.

We all celebrate his combination of faith, steadiness, humor and caring throughout a life well-lived.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2020 at Woodland Hills Funeral Chapel.  Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Woodland Hills Funeral Home. There will also be visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the health care professionals at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato and Ecumen Pathstone Living.

Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association or the Mankato Youth Baseball Association.
