Born October 10, 1920, Herbert J. Cummiskey lived a life that spanned a remarkable 97 ½ years, and passed away on April 27, 2018 at Laurels Edge Assisted Living in Mankato.
Herb served in the Navy as a signalman during WWII, later became a teacher, then worked for many years at Hamm’s Brewing, living in the Twin Cities until he moved back to Mankato in 2011.
Herb always enjoyed the love and companionship of family and friends, keeping close ties throughout his life. He appreciated music, was a life-long reader, an outstanding baker and always relished a sunny day.
Herb fully embraced life with optimism and a caring, generous spirit. It was his nature to be friendly and kind, and that was warmly reflected in his smile and the twinkle in his eye. In his later years Herb could not believe that he had attained an age well into his 90’s, but accepted it with a shrug and a smile. A long life, well and fully lived. A life to be remembered and celebrated.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents Al and Agnes Cummiskey; son, Gary Cummiskey; brothers, Frank, Ed, Clete and Clete’s wife June.
He is survived by his son John Cummiskey of Iowa City; his daughter, Mary Jaax of Marathon, WI; nephews, Dave Cummiskey and his wife Jane, Waterville, Pete and his wife Heather, Kodiak, Alaska, Dennis and his wife Lisa, St. Peter, Dan and his wife Cindy, North Mankato, Brian and his wife Maggie, Hamburg; nieces, Jo VanderHagen and her husband Tom, Annandale, Kay Tice and her husband Steve, Missouri, Annie Luebben and her husband Dan, Waterville; plus a cheerful number of grand nieces and nephews.
If you want to make a donation in Herb’s name please direct it to BENCHS Riverside Regional Pet Shelter in North Mankato.
There will be a Celebration of Herb’s Life Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Woodland Hills Funeral Home in Mankato. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato.

I am sad today to hear of the news of 'Uncle Herb'. I remember so well the Sunday afternoons when he would stop by our house for a visit. Usually he brought a bag of nuts or something to share. We truly considered him a member of our family. My parents thought so much of him over all the years.

He was a kind and gentle person. I will miss him not being here anymore.

Sincerely, Bridget Butzer Brandt
