A Celebration of Phyllis’s Life will be Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 11 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Neal Radichel officiating. Interment will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato.

The Spear Family will greet friends on Saturday morning from 9 A.M. until the hour of services at church. Woodland Hills Funeral Home of Mankato is handling arrangements.

I was born Phyllis Arlowene Heise on April 1, 1921 to Tony and Irene (Simmons) Heise in my grandparent's, Sara and Raymond Simmons, home on Glenwood Ave in Mankato. I had three brothers Norman, Kenneth, and Raymond Heise. I lived my whole life in Mankato, MN. I was baptized and confirmed from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Mankato. I graduated from Mankato High School in June 1939. I married Woodrow William Spear on June 17, 1940 in Osage, Iowa. We had two sons, Gary and Dale Spear and one daughter Paulette (Galstad) Spear.

My parents ran restaurants in Austin and Mankato and I helped as a waitress for over 25 years. I also served 4 years with Associated Engineering and was a secretary for the local chapter of the Minnesota Senior Federation for several years, and took many trips to the Capitol to help represent the Senior Federation in lobbying efforts. I cared for many family members in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes and did home care for all of them.

I lived through three floods, a tornado, and hurricane Ike. I survived breast cancer. I learned to drive at the age of 56 and drove until I was 93 years old. I built three homes over the years and enjoyed 19 years of camping. I loved to travel, having been to Spain, Alaska, Hawaii, Italy, Germany, France and Austria. We also traveled to the West coast, east to Florida and north to Canada. I loved watching Minnesota Twins baseball, and bowled up until my final days. I also volunteered for many organizations including the Open Door Clinic in Mankato, American Legion Auxiliary, and Immanuel Church Auxiliary.

I am survived by my two loving sons, Gary (Carol) Spear, Hibbing, MN, Dale (Rosalyn) Spear, Eagle Lake, MN; and one wonderful daughter, Paulette (Spear) Galstad. Winter Haven, FL; grandchildren, Greg Spear, Sheryl Selby-Spear (Al), Christopher Galstad, three great grandsons Keb Spear, Austin Chase Galstad, Ryan Galstad and one great granddaughter Calysta Galstad; I am also survived by my sister-in-law Kathy (Raymond, Danny) Heise; many nieces, nephews and cousins. I was preceded in death by my husband Woodrow; parents; infant grandson; brothers Raymond (Betty), Norman (Marge), Kenneth (Helen) and son-in-law John Galstad.

“You have made everything beautiful in its time, For everything you do remains forever.”

God Bless,
just little ol' me, Phyl
