Gerald “Jerry” E. Johnson, 83, of Mankato, MN died Friday, September 27, 2019 at Cottagewood Senior Communities in Mankato.  The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct 2 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. John Petersen officiating.  Interment with military honors will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Woodland Hills Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.

Gerald was born Oct 20, 1935 in Waseca, MN to Arthur and Margaret (Volk) Johnson.  His family moved to a farm in Forest City, IA in 1938; here he attended Mount Valley country school, and graduated from Forest City High School in 1953.  He was drafted into the US Army in January 1954 and discharged January 1956 from Ft. Knox, KY.  On January 6, 1957 he married Margaret Lund at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato.  Jerry worked as a route salesman for Chip Steak and then as a salesman for Brown & Williamson Tobacco from 1960 to 1976.  Beginning in 1976, he became an independent sales rep, traveling across the Midwest selling materials to manufacturers.  In 1985, he began working for the US Post Office and retired in 1994.  Jerry liked investing in real estate, and spent a lot of time buying, remodeling, and selling homes. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, and vacationing in Mexico. He loved spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren especially at Christmas time when they would make homemade ice cream together. He was a member of American Legion Post #11, the Mankato Area Veterans Memorial Honor Squad, and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.

Jerry is survived by his wife Margaret; sons, Steven (Lois) Johnson, Scott (Karen) Johnson, Stacy (Patti) Johnson all of Mankato, MN; daughter, Suzanne (Mike) Hansmann of Maple Grove, MN; grandchildren, Angela Bakke of Mankato, Heather Johnson of Owatonna, Joshua Johnson of Ft. Collins, CO, Eric Johnson of Denver, CO and Emily Johnson of Minneapolis; 4 great grandchildren; siblings, Noreen Hannaman of Mankato, Beverly Schoenfeldt of Iowa Falls, IA, Duane (Sharon) Larsen of Chula Vista, CA, Delaine (Randy) Hoeft of Forest City, IA.  He was preceded in death by his father in 1946, stepfather Andrew Larsen, mother, brother, Eugene Johnson and brother-in-law, DeWayne Hannaman.
