He completed his basic training at Camp Roberts in California. He spent eight years in the reserves on heavy artillery duty. He was honorably discharged February 20, 1960, due to hardship in the family. Austin married the love of his life, LaVine Grave, on August 18, 1956, in Vesta, Mn. They went on to have seven children and in 1969 made their final residence, St. Clair, Mn.
Austin worked for many years in road construction as an equipment operator. He also worked as a salesman for many years. After retiring Austin took an interest in woodworking, making many unique pieces for his family and friends.
