Bruce Donald Sherwood

Bruce Donald Sherwood, age 86, passed away holding his wife’s hand and surrounded by family on Sunday, July 10, 2022. 

He was born November 14, 1935, in Bird Island, MN, the son of Glenn and Marjorie (Beasley) Sherwood.  He grew up in Bird Island MN and prior to graduating from high school, participated in both basketball and football, achieving all conference player in 1951. In 1956, he was united in marriage to Mary Rust in Lake Lillian, MN.

He began his career as a painter in Wilmar, MN and served in the National Guard for 6 years. In 1963 Bruce accepted a position as a painter at Mankato State University and he and Mary moved that same year. He retired from Mankato State as a building maintenance supervisor 30 years later. 

Throughout his life Bruce enjoyed hunting, table tennis, and camping with family and friends. As his boys aged, Bruce developed a passion for motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, chainsaws, and genealogy. For many years Bruce and Mary traveled thousands of miles within the US, Canada, and Mexico while camping and site seeing on their motorcycle.

Bruce is survived by his wife Mary of Mankato; sons, Paul and April Sherwood of Nicollet, Keith and Fritzie Sherwood of N. Mankato, Troy and Rafelyn Sherwood of N. Mankato; Grandchildren, Matthew, Andrew and Lorena (Lambrecht) Sherwood, Hailey, Glenn, Trishia and Shekinah. Great grandchild, Riot and his sister, Bonnie Stevenson.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gary.

Bruce was a selfless, humble, kind, and generous man that would always drop what he was doing to help those in need. In his honor, the family will be hosting a Celebration of Life at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato, Saturday, July 30th, starting at 1pm.
