Gerald "Mike" Hoppe Obituary

Gerald "Mike" Hoppe, age 85, of Shakopee, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, at Friendship Manor in Shakopee. Born on March 7, 1939, in Mapleton, Minnesota, he was the son of Merril and Monica Hoppe. Mike experienced the loss of his father at a young age but was lovingly raised by his stepfather, Larry Kramer.

Mike attended a country grade school near the family homestead and graduated from St. Clair High School. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Army Reserves, serving honorably for eight years.

On October 30, 1961, he married the neighbor girl, Marjorie Seys. Together, they built a beautiful life and family. Mike was known as a jack of all trades; he was a licensed barber for most of his life and dedicated many years to farming. Additionally, he served as the Blue Earth County Deputy Sheriff for five years and was a volunteer firefighter for 20 years. His work in manufacturing included positions at both Hiniker Company and Minnkota.

Mike was a lifelong fighter with humble beginnings, earning a reputation for being tough. In his younger years, he excelled in Golden Gloves boxing, showcasing his determination and skill in the ring. He continued to fight against challenges throughout his life, especially in his later years against health issues, demonstrating his resilience and unwavering spirit.

Mike was also a deep thinker and inventor, holding a patent that he was especially proud of. He was always looking for ways to simplify processes and improve everyday tasks. Above all, Mike found his greatest joy in spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, attending their various activities and cherishing every moment together.

Known for his gentle nature and humble spirit, Mike had a special place in his heart for stray dogs and those less fortunate. He was rich in love for his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Mike is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie (Seys) Hoppe; children Laurie (Scott) Rahn, Barbara Fossum (married to Michael O'Brien), and Michael (Sonia) Hoppe; grandchildren Jarrod (Diana) Rahn, Justin (Jessica) Rahn, Jenna (Danny) Schmitt, Francis Fossum, Kelly (Nicole) Fossum, Carlee (Alex) Hunter, and Christina (Josh) Dalki; great-grandchildren Morgan, Maura, and Maxwell Rahn; Francis, Lowell, and Marjorie Schmitt; Jack, Mary Dooley, and Beau Rahn; and Maxine and a baby to be named (Hunter). He is also survived by his sister Diane Radtke; brother Merrill "Bill" Hoppe; and was preceded in death by his parents, Monica and Larry Kramer; brother Robert Hoppe; and sister Mary Lou Fossum.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Clair, with Father Robert Schneider officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. For those unable to attend, the service will be streamed online at www.as-ic.org.

Gerald "Mike" Hoppe will be remembered for his kind heart, inventive mind, and unwavering love for his family. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
