James “Jim” Thomas Petersen, age 73, died Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at his home.
Jim was born January 7, 1952 in Anthon, IA. He married Vicki Fodness in 1979. He loved Rugby and played while in the Air Force. In 1977 “Big Pete” played for MSU and later as faculty was the team’s Academic Advisor and coach. He earned his undergraduate degree at MSU and his doctorate from the U of M. He was a Professor and Dept. chair of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Department from 1982-2009.
For many years he made leather jackets and moccasins and, known as “Scout”, participated in rendezvous, reenactments, demonstrations for schools and taught several others these skills. He started the rendezvous held at Traverse des Soiux as part of the reconciliation with Dakota people and was part of establishing of Reconciliation Park in downtown Mankato.
He loved the outdoors, camping, hiking, hunting-especially watching his dog work, riding his Harley to the Black Hills with friends, poker, cigar club and the company of good friends. He took MSU groups to the Boundary Waters for many years and was also an established writer.
For many years he rang the bell for Salvation Army at Christmas giving away candy canes and good cheer, wearing several fun Santa suits he collected just for this time each year. He was a member of Hosanna Lutheran church.
Jim was an incredibly kind, loving, generous, fun-loving man who always went the extra step to help. He especially loved his family, friends and his dogs. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Vicki Fodness Petersen, brother Don Petersen, sister Sharon Livingston family, son Ryan Simmers family, Linda (Fodness) Lawler family, and Wendy Fodness Family.
