Larry Arthur Thompson, age 75, of Mankato, MN died Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at his home surrounded by family.
Larry was born on January 26, 1948 in Minneapolis. He grew up on a farm and attended high school in the small town of Storden, MN. After graduation in 1966, Larry went on to barber school in St. Paul, MN. He worked the majority of his 44 year career at Y Barbers in Mankato. He enjoyed building lifelong friendships with coworkers, clients, and his mentor Bernie Koenigs.
Larry developed a love of music in high school playing piano and drums, and in his early years in Mankato, joined his friends Larry Ulmen, Jerry and Kathy Sondergaard, and Penny Roemhildt in the “Sounds of Country” band. Larry met and fell in love with Pat during his band days and they were united in marriage on July 3, 1976. They were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Allison Marie in 1981.
Larry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, landscaping, crossword puzzles and listening to Country music. His deep love for dogs grounded him and gave him much joy and comfort throughout his life.
Larry is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughter, Allison (Jack) Jennings of Mankato; grandchildren, Landon and Logan Jennings; sister, Rebecca (Scott) Bolin of Excelsior; nieces and nephews, Paige (David) Chase from Santa Barbara, CA, Taylor (Bobby Markun) Nunn of St. Paul, and David Beecher of St. Paul; cousin (like a brother) Dan (Darcy) Thompson of Eagan; sister-in-law Pam DeMarce (Larry Schmidt) of Mankato; sister-in-law Willa Engelrup of Mankato; brother-in-law Doug DeMarce of Mankato.
He is also survived by many of Pat’s nieces and nephews who Larry made many holiday meals for in his early days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Hilma Thompson; Pat’s parents, Gearhardt and Winifred Zabel; brother-in-law James Nunn; sister-in-law Sharon Hueper and husband Emil; brother-in-law Gerald Zabel and wife Jeannine; aunts and uncles; cousins; and beloved dog, Sadie.
Visitation: Sunday, December 10 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm, and 1 hour before the Memorial service.
Memorial Service: 11:00am on Monday December 11.
