Richard C. Smith, age 69 of Madison Lake, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Cottagewood Memory Care in Mankato, and his loving wife Kathy R. Smith, age 66 of Madison Lake, passed away on Friday, September 9, 2022 at Oaklawn Rehabilitation Center in Mankato.

Richard Charles was born on May 25, 1953 to Walter Wesley and Dorothy Eleanor (Martin) Smith in Madelia, Minnesota.

Kathy Rae was born on February 25, 1956 to Gerald “Jerry” Michael and Faith “June” LaJune (Hoffmeister) Lunz in Madelia, Minnesota.

On November 30, 1974 Richard and Kathy were united in marriage in Madelia, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in New Ulm to raise their family, and after retirement they moved to their cabin in Madison Lake. Richard was the Owner/Operator of Gopher Concrete Products, Unit Step Form Company in New Ulm, Madelia, and Redwood Falls, and Kathy was employed doing clerical work by the Madelia Messenger, Kraft, and J.R. Schugel Trucking. Richard enjoyed camping, driving boats, and reading. Kathy enjoyed genealogy, scrapbooking, card making, quilting, sewing, games, and all sorts of crafts. They both enjoyed traveling, and spending time with their family.

Richard and Kathy are survived by their daughters, Melanie (Shawn) Wing of Le Sueur, Carrie (Scott) Deml of Waseca, Angela (Jake) Sukalski of Mankato; grandchildren, Ashley Bently, Galen Smith, Logan Wing, Thomas “T.J.” Deml, Kendra Sukalski, Eleanor “Ellie” Sukalski; Richard’s sisters, Katharine “Kathy” Love of Bakersfield, CA, Elizabeth “Betty” Kay Christiansen of Worthington, Margaret “Peggy” Nelson of Mankato; Kathy’s brother, Guy Lunz of Madelia; Kathy’s sisters, Betsy Hanson of Grand Marais, Jan Lunz of New Ulm, Deb Lokre of La Salle, Sandy Lunz of New Ulm; 18 nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Richard and Kathy were preceded in death by their parents, Walter and Dorothy Smith and Gerald ‘Jerry” and Faith “June” Lunz; Richard’s brothers, James Smith and Thomas Smith.
