Tommy Schabert Obituary

Thomas John Schabert, 72, Mankato, passed away September 17, 2023 at home with his family by his side.  A Celebration of Tommy's Life will be held from 1-3pm Saturday October 14, 2023 at The Venue, 1850 Madison Ave Suite 200, Mankato MN.

Tommy was born April 11, 1951 to Joseph and Katherine (Garaghty) Schabert in St. Peter.  He was united in marriage to Jane (Wellnitz) Kirby on November 29, 1999 in Branson, MO.  Tommy worked 38 years as a mechanic for the City of Mankato retiring in August 2014.

He was involved in Scouting, enjoyed primitive camping and was very proud of all three of his boys earning their Eagle Scout.  His garage was his castle and he loved his tools.  Tommy could never pass up buying a flashlight or tape measure even though he already had many at home.  He wasn’t afraid of a challenge to try things that he didn’t know how to do himself, teaching himself new skills.    He also was willing to teach his skills to others and enjoyed helping others.   Tommy also enjoyed refurbishing laptops, often driving many miles to find the best deals on them. Tommy enjoyed retirement when he could finally do what he wanted when he wanted.  He liked to go out for coffee weekly with the guys.  He enjoyed people and his neighbors.  Tommy also enjoyed playing Pokémon Go with his grandson, Bellamy.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Jane Schabert; his sons, Mark (Erika) Schabert, Dan (Heidi) Schabert, and Paul (Kayla) Schabert; daughter Becky (Matt) Westberg and step-daughter Keely (partner Derek) Unruh; grandchildren, Caleb, Luke, Peter, Joel, Charity, Lydia, Micah, Jenna, Bree, Brandy and Bellamy; brother, Robert (Bernie) Schabert; and sisters, Pat (Ron) Gaines and Geri McMichael.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mike, Larry, and Joe; and sisters, Diane and Kathleen.

His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
